THE COST OF GETTING AN INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT WRONG
I have listed a few of my top pieces of advice for anyone starting a new interior project, based on patterns I have seen quite a few times. These considerations will save time, money, and stress:
1. Moving into an empty space and filling it right away, or even before you move in
My advice: Take the time to live in the space, observe the natural light, understand how you use each area, and measure the space carefully. Rushing in with furniture and finishes can lead to costly mistakes or a home that doesn’t truly feel right.
2. Considering anything in isolation - colours, furniture, lighting, soft furnishings, architectural features
My advice: Always think in layers and as part of a whole. A wall colour might look great on its own, but how does it interact with furniture, lighting, and textures, and if you’re renovating multiple spaces, how do they all work together? Creating a cohesive palette and style ensures the space feels intentional and harmonious rather than pieced together.
3. Making choices that are trend-led, which you may not love in a few years
My advice: Trends are fun, and sometimes they come back around, but they should complement your personal style rather than define it. Invest in timeless elements for the core pieces, then add trend-forward accents that can easily evolve over time. Overall, choose what you love, not what you think you should.
4. Purchasing expensive items just because they look luxury
My advice: I am not saying avoid high-quality items if that feels right and if your budget allows, but balance is key. Make sure you allocate budget for all layers that complete a space: furniture, lighting, textiles, and finishes. Splurging without a plan can leave gaps in your design, whereas thoughtful investment ensures longevity.
5. Lack of planning / not planning for contingencies
My advice: Renovations and large-scale projects often reveal surprises such as unexpected costs, design tweaks, or delays. Write down all possible considerations and plan extra time and budget. This foresight prevents stress and allows smoother execution.
Ultimately, an interior design project should be seen as an investment: short-term effort, long-term reward.
Working with a professional designer, they will help you navigate all these decisions with confidence, ensuring your home isn’t just beautiful, but a sanctuary you love for years to come.
